I Am The Doorway – 2018
Production by: Wolf Media, CBA Productions
Returning from a deep space mission, astronaut Arthur (Simon Merrells) lands back on Earth surviving a near fatal crash that cost him the use of his legs. Arthur has sought isolation from the outside world. Needing someone to understand he asks his trusted friend Richard (Grant Masters) to come to him. Richard finds his friend with his hands wrapped, mentally distraught believing aliens are living inside him using him as a doorway for an invasion of Earth. As Richard tries to bring his friend back into sanity, Arthur only has one request. If it looks like he’s no longer in control of his body, run!
The “Dollar Baby” is an arrangement where author Stephen King grants permission to aspiring filmmakers to adapt one of his short stories into film for $1. Young British director Simon Pierce was granted such rights and the result is a spectacular twenty minute short film. Originally written by King in the 1970’s and published in 1978 as a part of King’s Night Shift collection of shorts. Pierce captures 70’s filmmaking on screen in a modern adaptation. It’s dark, it’s gloomy, it’s a little bit eccentric and a Stephen King story at its best.
Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival screened numerous short films and I did my best to catch as many as I could. This Stephen King story stood out among the rest not only in writing but in filmmaking and storytelling. Dollar Baby deals are meant to play non-profit at things like film festivals. I recommend you catch this one if and when you can. Having a Stephen King short story in your back pocket is a bit of an advantage but it is not only my personal favorite horror short, it's my overall favorite short film that played at Buffalo Dreams 2018.
