Review of "Depraved" by The Headless Critic

Depraved – 2019

Production by: Glass Eye Pix, Forager Films
Distribution by: IFC Midnight

He came into this world filled with wonder. He didn’t understand how he came to be. He turned to the people around him for help and to help him understand. He’s the crazy creation of a mad scientist who went berserk. Given the name Adam (Alex Breaux) by his creator Henry (David Call) he is the pieced back together body of multiple men giving him new life. With only glimpses of memories of his past, he is for all essence a child in a man’s deformed body shaped both physically and mentally by those who created him. Those who created him were only thinking of themselves though with no value of human life, so he learned to do the same.

A field surgeon suffering from PTSD finds a way to bring a man back to life piecing him together from different body parts. If only life were that simple. Alex Breaux captures you as Adam, the rebuilt man made into a monster. His forlorn love of Lucy (Chloë Levine) in life, Liz (Ana Kayne) as the first woman he came to re-know and Shelley (Addison Timlin) his one night love affair of the heart are relatable, heartbreaking and scary as he places all of his hopes and dreams for companionship in people he does not know. David Call gives an excellent performance in his Dr. Frankenstein-esq role of a character I would have like to seen explored further.

Writer, director and editor Larry Fessenden creates his own version of Frankenstein’s monster in this modern day retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic story. He does a great job of changing the age-old story to the twenty-first century adding his own unique vision. You will learn gravity with the rise and fall of the new Frankstein’s monster Fessenden creates. It is a story a humanity at it's purest form. Loved at birth, innocent even in creation. A life spent trying to do good to attain approval. A life still wrought with sin when all that was wanted was to not be alone. Now they hate him, now they hunt him.
