Single mother Sarah O’Neill (Seána Kerslake) moves to the Irish countryside with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey) looking to escape their troubled past. Sarah begins to notice changes in her son’s behavior. Is it the move making her son act differently or is it something else. As Chris’s behavior grows more disturbing Sarah begins to think a sinkhole they found deep in the forest near their new home may be responsible. Sarah grows scared of her own pre-teen son, or is it her son? “Do you ever look at your kids and not recognize them?” Sarah’s not sure this is her son at all.
Ireland’s Lee Cronin makes an impressive first feature in the dark and dreary The Hole in the Ground. Every parent’s nightmare is preyed upon as a mother begins to not recognize the behavior of her own son. Where is her son and who or what is she living with if it’s not him? The youthful, light and cheery Sarah O’Neill portrayed by Seána Kerslake begins to question her own sanity and whether or not her son is truly different or it’s just in her own mind. Cronin adds an interesting level to a coming of age of children with an ending so bleak you’ll question the reality of what you just watched.
